Bucks Advent Calendar: Saturday 9 December – A merry Craftmas for a good cause!
Date: 9th Dec 2017
Students and staff got creative this week to raise awareness of two causes – mental health charity Mind and importance of recycling.
The Marketing and Student Recruitment department held the first Crafternoon of the week as a fundraising event in aid of Mind, which is also one of this year’s RAG charities.
Staff created cards, decorations and even learned new skills for a donation and cakes were also on sale, so those who preferred chewing to gluing were also catered for!
Around one in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year.
Karen Bolton, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at Mind, said: “It can be very rewarding and relaxing to create something from scratch. Every penny raised will make a huge difference - just £21 could keep Mind’s online support community, Elefriends, running for one hour.”
If you need support or would like someone to talk to, Bucks students and staff can access free online support with Big White Wall. It can help with a variety of issues - struggling to sleep, feeling low, stressed or not coping. You can learn more about it here.
Recycled reindeer and more!
Following the crafting theme, the SU ran a Christmas craft table in Beats café at High Wycombe Campus on Thursday where students and staff could make festive decorations and gifts for free.

One of the favourite crafts of the day was cork reindeers and thanks to Janet’s local pub which collected all its prosecco corks for two months – there was plenty to go around.
If you missed it – you can find out how to make a similar cork reindeer from Red Ted Art.
Another craft afternoon is taking place at Pulse Café, at Uxbridge Campus, on Monday (11 December) from noon-2pm.
