Student’s colourful 125th anniversary mural brightens up dingy underpass
Date: 5th May 2017
The dark underpass between the town centre and the University has been transformed into a colourful mural officially marking our 125th anniversary thanks to students.
The mural, featuring on both walls of the underpass near Lily’s Walk, High Wycombe, was painted by local artist Dan Wilson who completed an Art Foundation Diploma at Bucks in 1993.
His creation is based on a design by Graphic Arts graduate, Will Dover who won a competition inspired and led by Joe Collins (pictured right), President of 雄鹿学生会.
Bucks New University’s Graphic Arts students were set a live brief to create two murals, more than 18 metres long, to cover the walls of the underpass with images that represent High Wycombe’s history and landmarks.
Will Dover, who received a £250 prize from 雄鹿学生会, created a design which includes the University’s Gateway building; Rusty Buck – the 雄鹿学生会’s mascot; the town’s swan crest; the Disraeli monument; the gates at Wycombe Wanderers’ ground; Hughenden Manor; a chair to mark the town’s furniture history; Pann Mill; the Golden Ball at West Wycombe; the Frogmoor Fountain of yesteryear; and the rolling Chiltern Hills and River Wye.
Dan, who also created the mural on the Brunel Shed at High Wycombe Station, said: “The public loved seeing the mural progress over the week.
“There were lots of positive comments from people passing by which made it engaging and fun. Will’s cheery, bold design was the perfect choice and I hope we’ve done it justice!”
The mural is also covered with an anti-graffiti coating.
Joe said: “I’m proud that Bucks students have designed and created a transitional gateway from the University to the town and hope that the local community will enjoy the transformed space.“I will step down as President at the end of June and I’m delighted to see the mural completed. It’s a great legacy of my time at Bucks New University.”
The project was funded by the University, with grants from 威科姆区议会 and town centre management company HWBIDCo, and grants from the ward budgets of three members of 威科姆区议会: Cllr Lesley Clarke; Cllr Mahboob Hussain and Cllr Alan Hill, all of the Abbey ward.
